Roanoke County hosted the Small Business Development Council (SBDC) Advisory Board at Hollins University on October 10th. The program was in advance of the E-Waste Recycling Event being hosted by the university October 10th-13th and the event’s major sponsor is Apple Computer. The purpose of the event is to identify the hazards of improper recycling and safe alternatives to dumping or incinerating electronic waste from businesses or private residences. Hollins University, Roanoke County and the Regional Chamber’s SBDC are publicizing this event through the SBDC in the hope of providing assistance to small business in the region.

Mr. Greg Henderson, Director of Systems & Support Services at Hollins University, served as the advisory board’s guest speaker by highlighting problems such individuals being exposed to toxic dust and lead coatings on monitors during improper recycling and its impact on the groundwater especially in underdeveloped countries. Mr. Henderson also addressed the security concerns involved in recycling hard drives that house sensitive company information. The recycling event was also made possible by a small grant provided by Keltech Inc.
