BALLYHACK ADDS WORLD-CLASS GOLF TO THE PROGRESSIVE ROANOKE REGION
ROANOKE, Va. — Roanoke is well known as one of America’s Most Livable Communities with its scenic beauty, outstanding quality of life and dynamic business climate. This summer it will also lay claim to perhaps the most spectacular new golf course in the country: Ballyhack.
Old World Experience
New Era Challenge
For those who want to experience the game of golf the way it was first conceived without the time and expense associated with international travel….Ballyhack is the choice.
Playing over a vast expanse of pristine Blue Ridge Mountain land, Ballyhack captures a unique, old world feel in its windswept, links-like fairways with unequaled terrain and dramatic views. Discovered and designed by renowned golf course architect Lester George and crafted by the experience of Landscapes Unlimited, Inc, Ballyhack evokes the passion and emotion of golf with friends, clients and family that transcends other private club experiences. The first class accommodations, designed by Balzer and Associates, will cater to the members’ most discerning needs while the extraordinary services, food and other amenities will promise an experience long lost in most modern facilities.
Set in a rare “view-protected” spread of land where the Blue Ridge Mountains meet the sky, and yet with downtown Roanoke a short 15-minute drive away, Ballyhack is one of a new breed of development: a destination golf retreat. The golf course itself, designed by George whose Kinloch Golf Club in Richmond is rated among the Top Ten Modern Courses in America, is a breathtaking layout. Spread over 190 acres, it boasts 50- to 70-foot elevation changes, with old-style, gouged-out, roughed-edge bunkers, and wide forgiving fairways.
Visitors to Roanoke have traditionally enjoyed a plethora of entertainment choices in discovering the unique character of this historic American community:
visiting its lively City Market;
stretching out on walking tours on Roanoke’s green-ways;
enjoying a variety of world class live performances in the Jefferson Center and the Performing Arts Center;
engaging in a wide range of weekly social events at multiple indoor and outdoor venues located throughout the Roanoke Valley;
admiring the region’s grand Georgian Revival architecture;
enjoying the O. Winston Link Museum — a true destination site for rail buffs in the heart of downtown;
attending various concerts and special events at the Roanoke Civic Center;
listening to the Roanoke Symphony or Opera Roanoke; and
exploring the historic Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center.
But this summer, visitors from around the country will join locals playing European highland-style golf at Ballyhack, on one of the country’s most dramatic landscapes overlooking Roanoke.
Ballyhack’s small, diverse membership will hail from all reaches of the country and travel to Roanoke to take advantage of all the Club and the Roanoke area have to offer.
Its developers — including legendary Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer of Blacksburg; amateur golf great Vinny Giles and course architect Lester George of Richmond; and Roanoke architectural and engineering firm Balzer & Associates — believe Ballyhack will redefine the private golf club experience.
Giles declared of Ballyhack: “The entire landscape is spectacular. It will be unique, dramatic and tremendously challenging. Lester’s design makes a statement: we’re doing something that is big and audacious and different.”
“People are tired of having to buy a residential lot at a remote destination, with a real estate-driven golf course; but they do want to belong to a getaway club,” said Bill Kubly, chief executive officer of another partner, Landscapes Unlimited of Lincoln, Neb. “The Ballyhack model — a very low-key club — will have only 60 local and 240 national members.”
Members, he said, “won’t have the headaches of keeping a second home and all that entails, but will still be able to get away to a wonderful golf retreat. Overnight lodging on the property for members and guests will include 15 four-bedroom, four-bath cottages, with living rooms, wet bars and outdoor patios, and along with all Ballyhack amenities, be well-appointed yet understated.
“Ballyhack,” said Kubly, “is going to be a special, low-key place for members to take their family, friends and clients for a special golfing experience, where 50 players is a ‘busy day.’ Simply an experience like no other. We truly believe Ballyhack will be one of the most unique golf retreats in America.”
