Packaging Corporation of America Grows in Roanoke County

ROANOKE, VA – Packaging Corporation of America (PCA), a manufacturer of corrugated shipping containers for industrial and commercial use, announced today that it has relocated its Roanoke operations to the former Ingersoll Rand facility at Shadwell Drive.  The company has completed significant renovations of approximately 170,000 sq. ft. of industrial space at the Shadwell facility and currently employs 75 people.  The company was most recently located in Roanoke City.

Based in Lake Forest, IL, Packaging Corporation of America is a world-class manufacturer of containerboard and corrugated packaging. While focusing on a single line of business differentiates them from major competitors, PCA has achieved a level of operational excellence that is highly respected within the industry. With 2005 net sales of $2.0 billion and 8,300 employees, PCA produced 2.3 million tons of containerboard and shipped 31.2 billion square feet of corrugated products.

In 2005, PCA produced over 1.4 million tons of kraft linerboard at their mills in Counce, TN and Valdosta, GA. PCA also produced 907,000 tons of semi-chemical medium at its mills in Tomahawk, WI and Filer City, MI. PCA’s 68 converting operations produce a wide variety of corrugated packaging products, including conventional shipping containers used to protect and

transport manufactured goods. They also produce multi-color boxes and displays with strong visual appeal that help to merchandise packaged products in retail locations.  In addition to the Roanoke operation, PCA operates other Virginia facilities in Harrisonburg and Richmond.

"At PCA, we are excited about the changes and the improvements we have been able to incorporate into our new building.  Our move was a result of careful planning to improve our operations and continue to grow our business.  We appreciate the warm welcome that Roanoke County has given us and look forward to increasing our involvement in the community," said Chris Loker, Sales Manager for the Roanoke operation.

PCA’s location in the Roanoke Valley of southwestern Virginia, allows for next day service to western and southern Virginia as well as eastern West Virginia. Furthermore, as an integral part of the PCA network, PCA Roanoke has the ability to service any point in the United States. In addition, this has helped the company become “rush order specialists.” On average, new items can be custom manufactured and delivered within four working days. However, they also have the ability to produce many products in less than 2 hours. With a dedicated fleet of tractors, trucks, and vans, the company is very flexible when it comes to delivery and can offer same day service.  PCA Roanoke maintains a full warehousing system to allow for JIT deliveries.  They are ISO certified and are committed to a total quality system, which enables them to not only meet but exceed their customers' expectations.

“We are pleased to welcome Packaging Corporation of America to Roanoke County,” said Roanoke County Administrator Elmer Hodge.  “The company’s move to the former Ingersoll Rand facility is a perfect match for this excellent industrial building. We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome such a long-standing, high-quality company to our community.”
